One night in October, somewhere in Zagreb's capital, something rather unusual was about to unfold. Never witnessed before in such a historic and glorious setting, a group of daredevils who simply could not resist a challenge, were looking for a dynamic night of entertainment and emotion. As they walked through the doors of the five star Regent Esplanade Hotel, they become part of the Libris communications Ultimate Pub Quiz.
Zagreb's iconic hotel, built in 1925 originally for the first-class guests of the world-renowned Orient Express on route between Paris and Istanbul, became the latest venue of the rapidly growing event.
Distinguished guests including politicians, films stars and Presidents have all experienced the splendour and glorious tradition this hotel offers – it was time for the Ultimate Pub Quiz to set the stage for the Battle of the Esplanade.
The magnificent Emerald Ballroom with its domed soaring roof and gleaming chandeliers warmly welcomed 24 teams consisting of foreign embassies, companies or simply a group of friends. The stakes were high as 6 triumphant teams would walk away at the end of the evening with prizes such as revitalizing massages at the Esplanade Health Club, the Wellness treats found at Terme Tuhelj and the opportunity to stay at The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Sun Gardens in Dubrovnik.
Once the Ballroom doors were closed, there was no turning back. Too late to chicken out. Teams knew exactly the objectives for the evening. Challengers were discretely checking out the fierce opposition spread throughout the ballroom. Looks can often by deceiving. Some teams fostered a strict strategic game play, others left it to lady luck and a few were even confused themselves as they couldn't manage to agree on the answers among their team!
The night would not have been possible without the positivity shown by all media sponsors and kind generosity from those who donated prizes.
Libris communications and The Regent Esplanade can only continue with this popular interactive event, responding to the strong positive feedback from those who experienced the Battle at the Esplanade!

Back by popular demand, the Ultimate Pub Quiz decided to add a further twist in the game that is taking Zagreb by storm. Bowling!! Westgate City Bowling at Croatia’s newly opened Westgate Shopping City, the largest shopping complex in the country became the next venue for the game that everyone just can’t get enough of!
With a grand total of 30 teams, the most popular event to date, Westgate city bowling transformed itself into a crowded, noisy, venue for more than 170 people all being treated with FREE bowling vouchers! Not only did we welcome new teams that joined in the frenzy, we also introduced new rounds such as TV comedy and the highlight of the evening – the BOWLING round!
As the evening unfolded, points fluctuated, adrenaline grew and teams were determined to struggle their way up the point’s ladder to victory.
The event continues to be supported by sponsors who generously provide great incentives for the winning teams. Profil International gave away 5 fantastic novels, Westgate Shopping City treated winners with 200kn vouchers, Nook steakhouse gave away 5 x steak meals and also Terra Mystica travel agency and Green River treating the first place winners with a day out Rafting on the Uni river!
All in all, for many it was the most successful event to date, and for us (the Libris Communications team) we sincerely enjoyed working with Westgate City Bowling and their team in co-organising the event. After the summer break we’ll be back for another wild encounter full of suspense and fun at the City Bowling Club!

On a night in mid June, as Zagreb city began to feel the summer heat, the tense atmosphere brewing at the Movie Pub as the next venue of the Ultimate Pub Quiz, somehow added to the adrenalin and challenge that the evening had in store for us all!
The Movie Pub, with its themed British ‘Pub’ ambiance together with the various movie memorabilia and signed photos of Hollywood stars both past and present almost felt as if we were among a star-studded public who were eagerly watching to see who would walk away victorious as the June winners.
The event continues to attract various support of which Libris Communications is always grateful. Westgate City Bowling kindly provided free bowling vouchers continuing the ‘team spirit’ factor. The Regent Esplanade Hotel gave five winners together with a crowd of all their friends a night out at the Hotel treated with a 30-litre barrel of beer and nibbles!!! Terra Mystica travel agency generously provided the unique prize of a hot air balloon ride over Zagreb for the heroic winners of the event!
Many teams now hooked on Ultimate Pub Quiz fever return and always welcome new teams joining in. The atmosphere grew and players composed themselves for kick-off. Cheers, tears, suspense, rivalry and anticipation all contributed to a fun, unique evening of tip-of-the-tongue trivia, bringing out the competitive side in us all!
Paris – New York – Peckham (as the crowd cheered!) A slice of David Hasslehoff’s ‘I’ve been looking for freedom’, Captain Bertorelli from Allo ‘Allo and a touch of Lisa Stansfield. We had a visit from E.T, met Collina and Mišo Kovač, Sarah Jessica Parker and Petar Ćobanković and returned to the 80s with Nick Kamen!

18th HUPE Annual Conference (Hotel Grand Adriatic - Opatija - Croatia - 17th April 2010)
As the Libris Communications Ultimate Pub Quiz 'fever' continues to build and capture the imagination of people up and down Croatia, it was time to enlighten the elegant Croatian coastal resort of Opatija at the Grand Hotel Adriatic with an evening event like they'd never seen before!
Prior to the event, the attendees of the 18th International Annual HUPE Conference (Croatian Teachers of English Conference) certainly were unaware of what exactly we had in store for them and how the evening would unfold, eagerly awaiting with anticipation kick-off at 9pm.
The teams had gathered, from all corners of Croatia. The energy and passion of the 160+ female challengers and 7 lucky men began to overflow the room as the 26 teams were announced one by one to the cheers and roars of confidence!
Would the Slavonians become heroes? Could the Dalmatians stand the heat? Would the Istrians show us all that when the going gets tough, the tough get going? Who would walk away as current 2010 HUPE Champions?
As the night unfolded, screams of spontaneous joy, surprise, and at times, madness echoed throughout the Grand Hotel Adriatic along the shores of the Kvarner Bay!
At the stroke of midnight the proud heroes of the evening were announced.

The Only Way Is Up.
Somehow, there are many of us who just can't get enough of the Ultimate Pub Quiz. Already as teams began to leave their offices and workplace on Friday afternoon, there was something in the air, something telling them that 'tonight's gonna be a good night'.
They were back. Back for more. Back for the unknown. Back for another set of mind teasing questions that sit there on the tip of your tongue, or back to improve their score ready to swoop in for the title! As always the event welcomed new teams of challengers, ready to show us all who in fact is a cut above the rest.
As a regular event in Zagreb, at the Big Mamma Pub, we aim to keep enthusiasm high by developing new rounds and making sure at any stage during the event it is possible to boost up team scores by awarding bonus points. Phone-a-friend was welcomed with delight as was extra Big Mamma bonuses.
Once again, the five star Regent Esplanade Hotel, Zagreb generously provided the event with first prizes of 5 x 1 night with breakfast at the Esplanade. Cinestar provided cinema goers with cinema tickets and the Big Mamma Pub awaited third place winners with 5x evening meals.
The evening had become a real rollercoaster ride of emotions as scores were bouncing, and the leaders literally being replaced throughout the game. After all was said and done, we all knew in our hearts there could only be one champion.
